YOUNGSTERS have been putting their football skills to the test in a summer training camp at St Gregory’s High School.
A group of 133 children, aged six to 14 years old, took part in the Britannia Soccer Camp.
St Gregory’s PE teacher Andy Carey led the sessions, based on his experience coaching in America.
The 38-year-old said: “I have worked for a few people both here and in the States on summer camps.
“We recognised that there was a need for it here because nobody seems to do these summer camps.
“So for five days from 10am to 3pm we have done an hour’s work of coaching in the morning, then a World Cup competition and Champions League competition, which are small–sided games, and then a penalty shootout and American penalty shootout. At the end we give out trophies for the winners and the player of the week.
“It’s been smashing so far and the standard has been very good.”
