PREGNANCY and childbirth are undoubtedly the most emotional and stressful experiences a woman will face and if this was not enough an expectant mother has allowed the Warrington Guardian to follow her journey.
Lindsay Kendrick is aged 25, 20 weeks pregnant and lives with fiance Paul Marston, aged 28, in Regency Park, Bewsey.
The first time mum, who works for Warrington Youth Club at the Peace Centre, in Old Hall, said: “I’m really excited. I just hope that everything runs smoothly over the next few weeks.”
Fortunately, Lindsay, whose due date is June 23, has a wide family support network including Paul’s first child Mia Antrobus, aged five, brother Chris, aged 26, who is based with the Army at Suffolk, sister Leanne Wallace, aged 22, who also lives in Regency Park, and brother and sister Ryan and Amelia, aged 17 and 15, who live in Wigan.
Lindsay has also been a kinship foster carer to her brother, Matthew Swift, aged 17, for the past three years and is close to Paul’s family – parents Angela and Tony and brother Chris, aged 24, from Birchwood.
Lindsay had her first ultrasound scan in December at 12 weeks, has taken tests for hepatitis, HIV and rubella and has been introduced to Warrington Hospital’s community midwives. Her second scan was last week.
She said: “The baby slept through the majority of it but I was told everything was fine and the next one is at 34 weeks. My placenta is positioned low though, which I’m told is common but if it hasn’t moved by the next scan I’ll have to have a csaesarian.
“Ideally I want a natural birth, the thought of having to have a epidural really scares me. I have decided I don’t want to know the gender until the birth.”
It has not all been plain sailing for Lindsay, who caught swine flu during her fifth week of pregnancy and took Tamiflu to combat it.
“As I was among the first wave of pregnant women to have it I was really concerned. I didn’t know if it would be fine to take medication but I was so ill and a high temperature can lead to a miscarriage.”
Lindsay also suffered bad morning sickness and added: “It wasn’t just the morning, it was all day and I felt rough. It’s only stopped recently, thank goodness.”
And if their lives were not hectic enough, Lindsay and Paul plan to move house in three weeks’ time and Lindsay is juggling her job and duties at home with studying part time for a degree in childhood and youth studies with criminology at Edge Hsill University.
Between now and June, Lindsay has four modules to complete and visits her campus twice a week: “I should be finished by May so I hope it won’t affect me. I’m dreading going into labour during an exam!”
